Description
Green Light at Rush Hour II is an original small Canary Wharf painting by Julie Swinsco. It captures the energy and movement of London’s Docklands on a warm evening.
A bus streaks through the busy junction as commuters wait to cross the road. Meanwhile, the green traffic light provides a vivid focal point within the scene.
Above them, the Northern Trust building towers into the evening sky. Its illuminated glass façade adds to the sense of scale and drama.
Although smaller, this painting retains the energy and atmosphere of the larger Green Light at Rush Hour. Its more compact proportions also make it an accessible original for collectors with a smaller space.
The Inspiration Behind Green Light at Rush Hour II
Canary Wharf has a fascinating combination of scale, architecture and movement.
The Northern Trust building creates an imposing backdrop to the scene. Around it, glass-fronted skyscrapers rise into the night and reflect the lights of the surrounding city.
However, I was equally interested in what was happening at street level.
The commuters waiting at the crossing provide a human presence within the composition. In contrast, the bus rushes past them, becoming a sweep of light and colour.
This relationship between stillness and movement became central to the painting.
Capturing Movement and Light
My main aim was to capture the bus’s dynamism.
Rather than painting it as a static vehicle, I wanted it to become part of the city’s movement. Its blurred form contrasts with the solid architecture towering above it.
Meanwhile, the illuminated windows sparkle against the darker evening sky.
I used various blues throughout the background. These cooler tones help the complementary oranges and warmer lights stand out.
The green traffic light adds another small but important colour accent. At the same time, the figures help establish both the location and the enormous scale of the surrounding buildings.
Ultimately, this small Canary Wharf painting is about the contrast between people, movement and monumental architecture. It captures a fleeting moment within one of London’s most distinctive urban landscapes.
