Description
Piccadilly Circus is an original Piccadilly Circus night painting by Julie Swinsco. It captures the light, movement and excitement of one of London’s most iconic locations after dark.
The glowing entrance to Piccadilly Circus Underground anchors the foreground. Beyond it, traffic races through the junction towards the huge illuminated advertising screens.
Meanwhile, the silhouette of the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain rises in the distance. Light trails, buses and cars transform the familiar London scene into something fluid and constantly changing.
The Inspiration Behind Piccadilly Circus
I am always drawn to busy intersections.
They are places where people, traffic, architecture and light constantly interact. For me, Piccadilly Circus is one of the most exciting examples.
It is vibrant at almost any time of day. However, at night it takes on a completely different character.
The advertising screens illuminate the surrounding architecture. Traffic creates streaks of colour through the junction. At the same time, familiar landmarks emerge from the darkness.
I wanted to capture this contrast between the recognisable and the fleeting.
The Underground entrance, fountain and advertising screens establish the location. Meanwhile, the moving traffic creates a sense that the scene could change completely within seconds.
Capturing Piccadilly at Night
Photography played an important role in developing the composition.
I combined several of my slow-shutter photographs of moving cars and buses. This allowed me to create a greater sense of travelling through the junction rather than recording a single frozen moment.
I then arranged the brighter areas to lead your eye through the painting.
The illuminated Underground entrance creates the first pool of light. From there, the movement of the traffic carries the eye across the composition and towards the advertising screens.
However, I wanted the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain to remain visible within all this movement. Its dark silhouette provides a point of stillness in the distance.
I worked gradually with very thin layers of oil paint. As a result, I could slowly build the glowing lights while retaining depth and atmosphere.
The painting on page one shows this contrast particularly clearly. The bright Underground entrance and blurred traffic dominate the foreground. Meanwhile, the fountain sits much more quietly against the illuminated city beyond.
Ultimately, I wanted this Piccadilly Circus night painting to capture the energy and enchantment of this special part of London after dark.
