Description
London Tuk-Tuk iii is an original Piccadilly Tuk-Tuk painting by Julie Swinsco. It captures a family travelling through the brilliant lights and colour of Piccadilly Circus.
The passengers sit inside a vivid yellow-and-pink Tuk-Tuk. Behind them, the city dissolves into sweeping bands of red, blue, white and orange.

The Inspiration Behind London Tuk-Tuk iii
The Tuk-Tuks around Piccadilly Circus seem perfectly suited to their surroundings.
They are colourful, exuberant and full of character. Meanwhile, Piccadilly provides its own extraordinary display of artificial light.
For this painting, however, I wanted the family inside the Tuk-Tuk to remain important.
They introduce a human moment into the scene. At the same time, everything around them suggests the speed and excitement of travelling through central London.
Detail Against Abstraction
I painted the family with greater detail while deliberately allowing the background to become much more abstract.
This gave me the freedom to concentrate on colour and texture.
I used acrylic paint to create horizontal sweeps across the board. As a result, the surrounding city seems to rush past the Tuk-Tuk.
The image on page one demonstrates this particularly well. The passengers remain visible within the vehicle. However, Piccadilly becomes a series of expressive horizontal marks behind them.
The result combines detail and abstraction to suggest a Tuk-Tuk moving through a bright London cityscape.
Ultimately, this Piccadilly Tuk-Tuk painting is about the experience of travelling through London rather than simply recording the city.
