Description
Enjoying the River is an original painting of the River Avon in Stratford by Julie Swinsco. It captures a warm summer day beside the River Avon in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Two paddleboarders drift along the river while a young boy cycles beside them on the riverside path. Meanwhile, sunlight, water and lush green foliage create a scene filled with colour and movement.
The painting captures a familiar Stratford setting. However, Julie’s interest lies as much in the fleeting activity and changing reflections as in the location itself.
The Inspiration Behind Enjoying the River
Stratford-upon-Avon always offers me interesting compositions.
On this particular day, I was drawn to the contrast between the lush green foliage and the sun-baked riverside path.
The trees cast rich greens across the water. However, the reflections were constantly broken and distorted by the river’s ripples.
Against this backdrop, the paddleboarders seemed to move almost effortlessly through the scene.
Then there was the young cyclist.
His movement along the path introduced another rhythm into the composition. For a brief moment, the cyclist and paddleboarders seemed connected, even though they were travelling independently.
Capturing Movement and Reflections
I wanted the cyclist to help lead your eye into the painting.
Therefore, I deliberately blurred his shoulder to suggest movement. His position also directs your eye towards the paddleboarder in the centre of the composition.
From there, the water takes over.
The bright reflections are not painted as perfect mirror images. Instead, the river’s movement fragments them.
This was important because I wanted the water to feel alive.
As you can see in the artwork on page one, the composition moves naturally from the cyclist in the foreground towards the central paddleboarder. Meanwhile, the second paddleboarder adds depth on the opposite side.
The white tray frame is also an interesting choice for this painting. It complements the brightness of the summer scene rather than enclosing it within the black frames used for many of Julie’s urban works. The artwork itself is oil on board and measures 45 × 33cm including its frame.
Ultimately, this River Avon Stratford painting captures the pleasure of an ordinary summer day. People, water, sunlight and reflections come together for a moment before continuing on their way.
