Description
Golden Hour Paddle is an original Stratford-upon-Avon river painting by Julie Swinsco. It captures a family paddleboarding on the River Avon during the magical last light of a summer evening.
The setting sun illuminates the old stone bridge in warm shades of gold. Meanwhile, the family glide through the calm water below.
Rich reflections ripple across the river, while areas of deep shadow contrast with the glowing Cotswold stone. The result is a peaceful moment filled with warmth, movement and evening light.
The Inspiration Behind Golden Hour Paddle
This is one of my favourite places to sit and watch the sun go down.
From outside the Boathouse, there is always something happening on the River Avon. Boats and paddleboarders move along the water, while the changing light constantly transforms the view.
On this particular evening, I was fascinated by the old bridge.
The setting sun illuminated the Cotswold stone and created rich areas of colour. At the same time, shadows from the surrounding trees became deeper and more pronounced.
Then the paddleboarders moved through the scene.
The family seemed to glide effortlessly across the still water. For a brief moment, the figures, bridge, reflections and evening sunlight came together.
Painting the Golden Hour
I wanted the bridge and figures to have very different qualities.
Therefore, I painted the bridge quite boldly in oils. Mottled shadows from the surrounding trees break across its warm stonework.
In contrast, I painted the figures more intricately.
Their reflections were particularly important. Because the evening was so calm, their forms were clearly visible in the water. However, subtle ripples still distort and soften them.
The artwork on page one shows this beautifully. The warm bridge creates a strong horizontal backdrop, while its dark arches provide depth. In front, the paddleboarders and their reflections introduce movement across the water.
The foreground then becomes increasingly reflective and abstract. Streaks of blue, white, gold and darker tones suggest the constantly changing surface of the River Avon.
Ultimately, this Stratford-upon-Avon river painting captures a fleeting golden-hour moment. It is about enjoying the last sunlight of the day before the colours, reflections and people move on.
