Stratford’s riverside festivals always provide me with wonderful imagery.
So much is happening at once.
People relax on the grass while others wander between the attractions. Bright flags flutter outside the food tents. Meanwhile, music from the bandstand adds another layer to the atmosphere.
I am particularly interested in these ordinary, unscripted moments.
Someone talks to a friend. Another person sits in the sunshine. A dog passes through the scene. None of these moments lasts very long.
However, together they create the character of the festival.
Capturing a Fleeting Moment
Candid photography played an important role in developing this painting.
I like to photograph people simply relaxing and enjoying themselves. Therefore, I often work from a lower viewpoint and use unusual crops.
I am not concerned if part of a figure disappears beyond the edge of the composition. In fact, that can make the image feel more immediate.
It creates the impression that we have arrived in the middle of something already happening.
That approach is particularly visible in River Festival. The large figure walking her dog dominates the right-hand side. Her head extends beyond the top of the composition.
Meanwhile, the people sitting on the grass lead your eye towards the bandstand in the distance.
Loose, Expressive Oil Painting
I wanted the painting itself to retain the spontaneity of the moment.
Therefore, I began with a red ground and deliberately left areas of it visible through the finished work.
I also kept the oil paint application loose.
The painting does not attempt to describe every figure or object perfectly. Instead, brush marks, colour and partially resolved forms suggest the constant movement of people through the festival.
The bright greens of the grass and foliage contrast with flashes of red and pink. At the same time, the blue sky evokes a warm summer day.
Ultimately, this Stratford-upon-Avon festival painting is about memory as much as place. It captures the feeling of a sun-drenched afternoon spent enjoying music, friendship and life beside the River Avon.
