The Inspiration Behind Middle Dock Station
I was fascinated by the contrast between the dark water and the illuminated architecture around Middle Dock.
The dock itself looked almost menacing. In contrast, the skyscrapers sparkled in the distance, and the DLR station glowed with a rich orange light.
I particularly liked the station’s architecture. Its curved glass roof has an almost Victorian quality, despite being surrounded by the modern towers of Canary Wharf.
The railway bridge was equally important to the composition. Its colourful patterns and strong geometry create a route through the painting. As a result, your eye is drawn across the dark water and towards the illuminated station.
This contrast gives the painting its atmosphere: darkness against light, fluid reflections against rigid architecture.
Creating a Canary Wharf DLR Painting
I approached this painting differently from some of my other Canary Wharf works.
Instead of concentrating on individual windows and precise architectural details, I wanted the buildings to feel monumental.
Therefore, I worked with a more impasto technique. I used palette knives and scrapers alongside oil paint to create stronger marks and a more abstract surface.
However, I deliberately kept greater precision within the railway bridge. Its structure provides a strong focal point and helps lead the viewer through the composition.
The darker blues give the painting its brooding character. Meanwhile, reflected lights shimmer across the water and prevent the foreground from becoming completely still.
Ultimately, I wanted this Canary Wharf DLR painting to capture the drama of a winter evening at Middle Dock. It is a moment when familiar architecture becomes transformed by darkness, colour and reflected light.
