Description
Young Love in Prague captures a fleeting, tender moment on one of the city’s iconic trams. A young couple sit side by side as the tram speeds from left to right across a pedestrian crossing. Meanwhile, a white car keeps pace alongside. The background buildings blur into motion, yet the couple remain in focus, creating a striking contrast.
Inspiration for Young Love in Prague
I have always been fascinated by Prague’s trams. Their red-and-white bodies are both beautiful and iconic. However, they are also fast and dangerous, and I had to stay alert while out taking reference shots.
At the same time, I found myself focusing more on the energy of the scene than on the traffic rushing around me. This painting grew out of that mix of danger, vitality, and affection I witnessed in the city.
Techniques and Media Used
The city rarely lends itself to a square format. In this case, I used it deliberately to frame the couple as the focal point, while blurring the rest of the scene. I applied thin layers of oil paint for the background to keep it loose and fluid.
By contrast, I worked the foreground with thicker paint and a palette knife, giving it more texture and weight. As a result, the drying process took much longer, but it allowed the couple to remain sharp and luminous against the motion around them.
