Description
Pink Piccadilly is an original Piccadilly London night painting by Julie Swinsco. It captures the colour, movement and excitement of central London after dark.
On a clear early spring evening, Piccadilly glows beneath vivid pink light. Traffic sweeps through the street while people gather outside the Hard Rock Café. Meanwhile, commuters emerge from the Underground into the night.
Rather than concentrating on architectural detail, the painting captures the atmosphere of the moment. Light, people and traffic merge to create a vibrant impression of London in motion.
The Inspiration Behind Pink Piccadilly
The extraordinary pink glow across the buildings first caught my attention.
Advertising lights on the opposite side of the street transformed the architecture. As a result, familiar buildings took on a completely different character.
I wanted to capture that glowing atmosphere without making every building or figure too detailed. However, the entrance to the Hard Rock Café was important. It provides a recognisable point within the painting and helps establish the location.
I was also interested in the contrast between movement and stillness.
Cars rush through the left side of the composition. In contrast, the Underground entrance creates a calmer space on the right. Here, commuters appear from below street level before joining the movement of Piccadilly.
Painting Light and Movement
I began Pink Piccadilly by pouring and splashing very thin layers of purple and pink oil paint across the canvas.
Once these first layers had dried, I started building the architecture. However, I kept the sky fluid and allowed the buildings to soften as they disappeared into the distance.
Towards Chinatown, sparkling white lights provide another point of contrast.
I used my own slow-shutter photographs of moving cars as references. These allowed me to explore the abstract shapes created by traffic and light rather than simply painting individual vehicles.
The lower left of the painting therefore becomes a rush of colour and movement. Meanwhile, the Underground entrance remains comparatively calm.
Reflections along the railings lead the eye deeper into the composition. Their lines are echoed by the streaking taillights of the traffic.
Ultimately, I wanted this Piccadilly London night painting to capture the sensation of being there. It is about the brilliance, movement and excitement of walking through the heart of London after dark.
