Description
Tower Bridge Rush Hour is an original Tower Bridge London painting by Julie Swinsco. It captures one of the capital’s most iconic landmarks on a clear, crisp night.
Streams of traffic sweep towards the bridge as glowing taillights create ribbons of colour across the road. Meanwhile, Tower Bridge rises above them, illuminated against the deep night sky.
The contrast between the historic architecture and fast-moving traffic gives the painting its energy. It captures a fleeting moment in which London’s past and present seem to meet.
The Inspiration Behind Tower Bridge Rush Hour
Tower Bridge has an extraordinary presence at night.
Its Neo-Gothic architecture echoes the medieval turrets of the neighbouring Tower of London. Yet below it, modern London is constantly moving.
I was particularly drawn to the bridge as a portal. Traffic appears to pour endlessly through its great arch before disappearing into the city beyond.
On this particular evening, the conditions added to the atmosphere. The night was clear, and the lights shimmered against the darkness.
I wanted to capture that contrast. The bridge feels solid and timeless, while the traffic below is constantly changing.
Capturing London in Motion
Photography plays an important part in the development of my urban paintings.
For Tower Bridge Rush Hour, I used slow-shutter camera settings to photograph the moving traffic. This transformed individual vehicles into sweeping trails of light.
The technique also intensified the glow of the spotlights illuminating Tower Bridge.
I then interpreted these photographic observations in oil paint rather than reproducing them literally.
The flowing red and orange lights create movement across the foreground. In contrast, cooler blues dominate the bridge and night sky.
As a result, your eye follows the traffic towards the illuminated arch and into the painting.
Ultimately, I wanted this Tower Bridge London painting to capture more than an iconic landmark. It explores the relationship between architecture, movement and light within the constantly changing city.
