640 East is an original Canary Wharf nightlife painting by Julie Swinsco. It captures the colour, energy and atmosphere of London after dark.
The brilliant red neon of the 640 East bar spills across the foreground. Meanwhile, a couple walk from the Tube to join friends inside.
Above them, the glass-and-steel high-rise catches and reflects the surrounding city lights. Its immense scale dominates the scene and appears to rise beyond the canvas. In contrast, the timber-clad bar below feels warm, intimate and full of life.
This relationship between people, architecture, light and movement fascinated me. The evening itself is still. However, reflected colour and the anticipation of the night ahead give the painting a wonderful sense of energy.
The Inspiration Behind 640 East, An Original Oil Painting by Julie Swinsco
I was initially drawn to the brilliant red neon 640 East sign. I also loved the extraordinary pool of red light that it created around the bar.
Inside, people gather and socialise. Meanwhile, the high-rise immediately above them appears strangely quiet and almost empty.
Flashes of green and other colours illuminate its glass façade. As a result, the building seems even more imposing against the intense red glow below.
I particularly liked the contrast between the lone couple and the architecture towering above them. They occupy only a small part of the composition. Yet, their presence gives the painting its human story.
It is a transient moment – people arriving, light reflecting, and the city constantly changing around them.
Creating a Canary Wharf Nightlife Painting
I worked mainly with brushes and very thin layers of oil paint. This allowed areas of the white ground to remain luminous beneath the surface.
As a result, I could recreate the intensity of the artificial light without making the painting feel heavy.
For the foreground, I used a compressor and spray pen. This created the softer, more diffused pool of red light cast by the bar.
At the same time, I wanted the paint to remain fluid, atmospheric and evocative. This contrasts with the strength and rigidity of Canary Wharf’s architecture.
Ultimately, the painting is not intended to be a precise record of a building or bar. Instead, I wanted to capture the feeling of being there.
It is about the scale of the city, the glow of London nightlife and a brief moment of human movement within it.
