Description
Dusk at Middle Dock is an original Canary Wharf reflections painting by Julie Swinsco. It captures a calm spring evening at Middle Dock, where light, water and architecture come together.
The elevated Docklands Light Railway bridge crosses the composition between Heron Quays and Canary Wharf. Below, reflections shimmer across the still water. Meanwhile, the glass towers rise behind it, softened by the pale evening sky.
The result is a quieter view of Canary Wharf. Instead of focusing on its usual pace and intensity, the painting explores stillness, atmosphere and reflected light.
The Inspiration Behind Dusk at Middle Dock
I was drawn to the point where the sky seemed to meet the calm surface of the dock.
The DLR bridge gave the scene a strong structural element. However, the reflections beneath it softened the architecture and created a sense of movement across the water.
I was also fascinated by the colours appearing around Canary Wharf. Some of the annual Winter Lights installations can be seen across the water. Their glow is echoed around the glazed domes of Canary Wharf Underground station.
The pink detail within the bridge became particularly important to me. As a result, I repeated that colour in the paler lights around the Underground station. This helped connect the different parts of the composition.
Creating a Canary Wharf Reflections Painting
I built Dusk at Middle Dock slowly using very thin layers of oil paint on canvas.
I mainly worked with brushes. However, I also used rulers, credit cards and other tools whenever I needed a particular mark or edge.
The strong lines of the glass skyscrapers were important to retain. At the same time, I allowed some of their edges to merge into the pale purple sky. This helped create a greater sense of distance and depth.
I also introduced a small number of figures in the background. They provide a sense of scale without distracting from the wider composition.
The palette is deliberately restrained. Yet flashes of pink, reflected light and the illuminated architecture bring energy into an otherwise peaceful scene.
Ultimately, I wanted to capture a more serene side of Canary Wharf. The painting is about the relationship between structure and softness, still water and reflected light.
