The Inspiration Behind Piccadilly Rush Hour
Piccadilly Circus is a part of London that always draws me back.
I have photographed this junction many times, both day and night. However, it never seems quite the same twice.
Architecture, sculpture, traffic, people, colour and light are constantly interacting. As a result, there is always another moment or viewpoint to explore.
For this painting, I was particularly interested in the cyclist moving through the junction.
He gives the painting a strong sense of direction. At the same time, the red car disappearing to the left creates movement in the opposite direction.
Behind this activity, the Eros fountain remains almost timeless. The contrast between the stationary landmark and the moving traffic became central to the composition.
Capturing Speed and Movement
Piccadilly Rush Hour is deliberately small in scale.
Working on an A4-sized board allowed me to concentrate on the most important elements. This allowed me to simplify the scene rather than get distracted by unnecessary detail.
I used oil paint with an impasto approach to give the surface greater texture and presence.
Although the painting is relatively small, I wanted it to have real visual weight.
The cyclist is recognisable, yet the marks around him become increasingly fluid. Likewise, the red car is transformed by speed into streaks of red, orange and dark paint.
The architecture provides structure behind this movement. Meanwhile, the open road creates space for the figures and traffic to travel through the composition.
Ultimately, this Piccadilly Circus rush hour painting is about the experience of moving through London. It captures one brief moment of speed, colour and light before everything changes again.
