Description

Green Light at Rush Hour is an original Canary Wharf rush hour painting by Julie Swinsco. It captures the movement and energy of London’s Docklands on a warm evening.

A bus streaks through the busy junction beneath a green traffic light. Meanwhile, a couple walk along the pavement beside it. Above them, the illuminated Northern Trust building rises dramatically into the night sky.

Light, movement and architecture come together to create a vivid impression of Canary Wharf after dark.

The Inspiration Behind Green Light at Rush Hour

Canary Wharf has a very particular atmosphere at night. Its glass skyscrapers, illuminated offices and busy streets create an environment filled with reflected light.

I was especially drawn to the buildings’ scale. The Northern Trust office block forms an imposing backdrop to the painting. Around it, other skyscrapers rise into the evening sky and reflect one another in their glass façades.

However, I also wanted to capture the city’s human scale.

The couple walking beside the road provide that sense of scale. In contrast, the blurred bus suggests the constant movement of people through Canary Wharf.

The green traffic light became a small but important focal point within the composition.

Capturing Light and Movement

My main focus was the contrast between the sparkling office windows and the streaks of light created by the moving bus.

I used a limited palette to create the atmosphere of a clear, warm evening. Deep blues dominate the architecture and night sky. However, complementary oranges introduce warmth and energy.

Against these colours, the green traffic light provides a subtle additional accent.

The blurred movement of the bus contrasts with the strong vertical lines of the surrounding skyscrapers. As a result, the painting balances movement with structure.

Rather than recording every architectural detail, I wanted to capture the feeling of looking upwards through Canary Wharf at rush hour. Light, traffic and people become part of the same constantly changing urban landscape.
