Night Train from Leam captures the vibrant atmosphere of Leamington Spa through a stunning depiction of the iconic metal railway bridge at night. As a train flashes through the bridge, the slick, wet road glistens beneath it. Meanwhile, the yellow lines shimmer with the approach of traffic from Clemens Street.

Inspiration For Night Train From Leam:

My inspiration for Night Train from Leam stems from my deep obsession with the striking metal railway bridge. Having grown up in a steel town up north, I find the bridge’s stature both regal and dignified. Additionally, its position above a bustling road intersection, complete with one of my favourite yellow box junctions, adds to its allure. What more could a girl want!

Built at the turn of the century, the bridge spans 150 feet and weighs 60 tons. Although it initially featured a double span, only one remains since the 1960s.

Despite exploring many buildings and locations in Leamington, I consistently feel drawn to this bridge. I have photographed it numerous times, particularly at night during the rain, utilising a slow shutter speed. In fact, I have crafted at least seven paintings of this landmark, along with several drawings and pastel pieces.

Techniques and media used:

Regarding techniques and media, I focused on an overall colour scheme of golds, yellows, and oranges. This vibrant palette contrasts beautifully with the darkness of the night sky and the shadows cast by the monumental bridge on the distant brickwork.

Moreover, by working in a square format, the bridge occupies the top third of the composition, allowing the glistening street below to shine brightly through multiple glazes that enable the colours to glow.
