Sculling on the Avon is an original Stratford-upon-Avon rowing painting by Julie Swinsco. It captures four rowers and their cox moving along the River Avon on a bright summer afternoon.
Behind them stands the theatre’s distinctive architecture. Meanwhile, large red parasols add flashes of warm colour along the riverbank.
The scull cuts across the water in the foreground. However, rather than freezing the action, Julie has deliberately allowed much of the scene to blur. As a result, the painting conveys the sensation of watching the rowers pass.
The Inspiration Behind Sculling on the Avon
There always seems to be activity on the River Avon.
Scullers regularly train along this stretch of water. They bring another sense of movement and energy to the river as they practise and perfect their technique.
I find them fascinating to watch.
This particular location also gives me a wonderful combination of people, water and architecture.
The theatre provides an unmistakable Stratford backdrop. At the same time, the red parasols along the riverbank introduce strong flashes of colour.
It is a place where people gather, relax and simply watch the world go by.
Capturing the Movement of the Scull
Movement was particularly important in this painting.
My starting point was a series of slow-shutter photographs taken on a beautiful sunny afternoon.
Instead of producing a perfectly sharp image, the slower shutter allowed elements of the scene to blur. I wanted to carry that quality into the finished painting.
Therefore, much of the composition has deliberately softened edges.
The rowers remain recognisable. However, their movement begins to merge with the reflections and surrounding landscape.
The water is treated in a similarly expressive way. Greens, blues and flashes of reflected colour move across its surface.
As seen in the artwork on page one, the long white scull creates a strong horizontal line across the composition. In contrast, the rowers provide a repeating rhythm of figures and oars.
Behind them, the theatre anchors the painting firmly in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Ultimately, this Stratford-upon-Avon rowing painting is about more than the sport itself. It captures a fleeting moment of activity on the River Avon and the pleasure of simply watching life unfold beside the water.
