Description

Shaftesbury Avenue is an original Shaftesbury Avenue London painting by Julie Swinsco. It captures the colour, movement and cosmopolitan energy of this busy central London street.

Red lanterns from nearby Chinatown float above the pavement. Meanwhile, traffic moves along Shaftesbury Avenue towards Piccadilly Circus.

People, cars and architecture merge within the composition. However, familiar details provide just enough information to establish a strong sense of place.

The Inspiration Behind Shaftesbury Avenue

London’s architecture, traffic and people are a constant source of inspiration for me.

Shaftesbury Avenue is particularly fascinating because so many different elements come together within one street.

The bright theatre signs add colour and energy. At the same time, the red lanterns of Chinatown introduce another cultural identity into the scene.

I love this mixture.

London can change character within just a few steps. Here, the West End, Chinatown and Piccadilly seem to overlap.

The result is a busy but positive atmosphere. It feels vibrant, diverse and unmistakably London.

Painting Movement and the City

Shaftesbury Avenue is a relatively small painting. Therefore, I wanted to concentrate on the movement and atmosphere of the street rather than include every architectural detail.

I worked in acrylic paint on board.

Because acrylic dries quickly, I could drag the paint horizontally across the surface. This allowed me to create the more abstract areas of the sky and road.

I then used finer brushes to introduce selected details.

As a result, the architecture remains recognisable without becoming rigid. The people and traffic also appear to move through the painted surface rather than simply sitting within it.

The artwork itself shows this particularly well. Broad horizontal marks sweep across the road and moving car. In contrast, the red lanterns create a strong rhythm across the left of the composition.

The pedestrians provide another point of interest. Although loosely painted, they introduce a human scale against the surrounding architecture.

Ultimately, this Shaftesbury Avenue London painting captures the hustle and bustle of the West End. It is a small but energetic impression of people, traffic, theatre and culture coming together in the heart of the capital.
