Description
The Kiss captures a fleeting, intimate moment between a young couple. I painted the scene from a very low angle, looking upwards as they kissed. As a result, the boy appears suspended in the air, almost dreamlike, reminiscent of a Chagall painting.
I chose fresh, bright colours for the upper section of the painting. In doing so, I wanted to emphasise the energy, joy, and vitality of this loving moment. The dark coat of the girl contrasts against the vibrant blue sky, grounding the composition while keeping the focus on their embrace.
Inspiration for The Kiss
I love painting figures that connect, touch, and embrace. Because of this, I always look for ways to capture the movement and emotion of human connection. Here, the figures are caught mid-action, kissing, and the unusual low viewpoint makes the viewer stop and question what they are seeing.
Consequently, the painting feels both dynamic and tender.
Techniques and Media Used
I worked with acrylics on paper, letting the medium remain alive and fluid. First, I splashed and dribbled paint, allowing wet colours to merge and form part of the composition.
Then, I introduced a trickle of hot reds and yellows that flows down from the boy’s mouth into the girl’s face, visually binding them together. Finally, I layered the bright blue of the sky against her darker coat to heighten contrast and mood.
