Description

London Tuk-Tuk i is an original yellow Tuk-Tuk London painting by Julie Swinsco. It captures a brightly coloured Tuk-Tuk travelling through Piccadilly Circus in the heart of London.

The yellow vehicle flashes across the foreground. Behind it, the famous LED screens dissolve into a kaleidoscope of red, blue, green and white.

Rather than recording Piccadilly Circus literally, Julie has transformed the scene into an expressive study of colour, light and movement.

The Inspiration Behind London Tuk-Tuk i

The colourful Tuk-Tuks of central London have always caught my attention.

They are bright, sometimes wonderfully gaudy and seem completely at home among the lights and activity of Piccadilly Circus.

I wanted to capture that sense of fun.

I began by photographing the Tuk-Tuks using a slow shutter speed. As they moved through the streets, their shapes became blurred and distorted.

At Piccadilly Circus, this effect is even more dramatic. The huge LED screens, shop signs and traffic create an extraordinary mixture of colour around them.

For me, the Tuk-Tuk becomes part of that constantly changing display of London light.

Creating Colour and Movement

I used quick-drying acrylic paint to develop the sense of movement within London Tuk-Tuk i.

Rather than relying only on brushes, I dragged paint horizontally across the board. I used squeegees, cards, rulers and other tools to create the marks.

This allowed colours and shapes to stretch across the surface.

I often work on several boards at the same time. Once the backgrounds are dry, I consider which particular Tuk-Tuk works best with each composition.

For this painting, the yellow Tuk-Tuk provides a striking contrast with the intense colours behind it.

As you can see in the artwork on page one, the vehicle remains identifiable. However, both it and the surrounding city appear to be moving.

The result is deliberately semi-abstract.

Ultimately, this yellow Tuk-Tuk London painting is less about documenting a vehicle or landmark. Instead, it captures the sensation of travelling through Piccadilly Circus, surrounded by colour, light and movement.
