Description

London Tuk-Tuk ii is an original Chinatown London Tuk-Tuk painting by Julie Swinsco. A luminous green Tuk-Tuk speeds along Shaftesbury Avenue towards the top of Chinatown.

Above the busy street, rows of red lanterns shimmer against a clear, glowing sky. Meanwhile, the brilliant green of the Tuk-Tuk provides a striking contrast with the reds and oranges around it.

The Inspiration Behind London Tuk-Tuk ii

London’s colourful Tuk-Tuks are wonderful subjects to paint.

For this work, I was particularly attracted to the contrast between the bright green vehicle and Chinatown’s red lanterns.

The location also fascinated me. The scene is around the junction of Wardour Street and Shaftesbury Avenue. Here, the busy West End meets the distinctive colours and atmosphere of Chinatown.

I wanted the sky to provide a calmer space above all this activity. In contrast, the street below is filled with pedestrians, traffic and movement.

Creating Movement in Acrylic

I used large brushes and thin layers of acrylic paint to create a sense of speed.

The quick-drying paint allowed me to work freely across the board. This let me blur and simplify parts of the street while retaining enough detail to establish the location.

The Tuk-Tuk appears to speed through the foreground. At the same time, the lanterns create their own rhythm across the composition.

Ultimately, this Chinatown London Tuk-Tuk painting captures a brief flash of colour and movement on one of the capital’s busiest streets.
